Key Associate Kalyn Epps had an exciting start to 2021 - she’s currently working in education on the Canary Islands. We checked in with her to get an update on her exciting journey, and she was kind enough to send some beautiful photos too!
Since January, I've been carrying out my Fulbright grant in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the co-capital of the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands are an archipelago that form Spain's southernmost Autonomous Community. During my time here, I serve as an English Teaching Assistant (ETA), the primary duties of which are to assist the head teachers with lessons and help students on their journey to becoming bilingual (or, in some cases, trilingual).
I feel very fortunate to not only have the opportunity to get to know the community better but also to be able to explore the islands as well — and to do so with the support of family and friends back home. Perhaps one of the things that surprised me most was how my PR background has helped me in my ETA role. In PR, we present information in a way that is understandable and interesting to our audiences. We get to the heart of the matter and pull out the "why" behind the story. I was happy to find a lot of parallels in my daily work in the classroom.
